New MeetUp Group: Vaginismus, dyspareunia and infertility support group

Organized by Rachel Barr in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

From the Meetup Website

Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup’s mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.

We recently learned that this meetup group was formed as a support group for women with vaginismus, dyspareunia and infertility. Rachel’s description on Meetup regarding this group is as follows:

This group is for women that are struggling with sexual pain disorders such as Vaginismus or Dyspareunia and for women that find themselves alone with issues such as, infertility, relationship issues, sexual abuse or sexual assault survivours. My aim is for this group to be a safe place to find support from other women who are experiencing similar or identical issues. Many women who Vaginismus support groupexperience sexual pain disorders or infertility issues find themselves isolated and alone with no one to confide in about their embarrassing or sensitive issue. There are also many men who are affected by their partners sexual pain disorder and they also require support too. This group will act as a support group where we can support each other through social gatherings, educational meetups, practical advice on how to overcome sexual pain disorders. This group will also look at ways that we can give women a voice who feel they have no voice. Maybe you are a woman who does not have any sexual pain disorders or infertility issues but you would like to support those women that have issues by looking at ways that we could raise awareness or raise funds for couples that have infertility issues and cannot afford treatment. Whether you are a victim of sexual pain disorders, infertility issues or relationship issues or a professional that would like to learn more or provide educational input then this group is for you. Maybe you are a family member or a friend of someone who is suffering with one of the issues raised and you are wanting advice on how to support them. I am a Registered Nurse who would like to offer my services.

It is our feeling that this is an excellent way to raise aware of sexual pain disorders and to form support groups throughout the world. This particular meetup group is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; however, meetup groups like this could be formed all around the country. Even if the group ended up with only 3, 4 or 5 members, the support and advise they would receive would be priceless.

If you are in the Calgary, Alberta, Canada area, I urge you to join this meetup group. If you live elsewhere, than I ask that you consider starting a meetup group of your own. I am sure that Rachel would be happy to give some advice on the logistics of forming a meetup group of your own.
