Chapter 2 discusses the history of vaginismus and a description of a case report which enabled Dr. Sims to make this diagnosis in 1861 and coin the medical term “vaginismus”. A direct quote from his paper is included. It is noted that vaginismus is both a physical and a psychologic problem and that treatment needs to address both issues. The physical aspects of spasm of the entrance to the vagina (“the wall” as so many patients note) causes a profound degree of fear and anxiety to penetration because of severe pain.
A case history from Dr. Pacik describes the typical symptoms and likely causes of vaginismus which can result in severe relationship disorders and feelings of being a “freak”.
